Generative Design and AI are taking the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) industry by storm. Yet, with so many tools out there, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed—and that’s exactly what happened to me when I first started exploring these technologies. Today, I’d like to share why I took a deep dive into 30 AI & Generative Design tools and how it can benefit architects, developers, real estate professionals, and planners.

The Overwhelming World of AI & Generative Design
When I initially dipped my toes into Generative Design and AI software, I quickly discovered there were countless options—but almost no unbiased guidance. I wanted to know which tools would best streamline the concept design process, yet every source I found had its own set of biases.

So, I decided to start from scratch and build my own review process. I shared a list of 30 top AI & Generative Design tools on LinkedIn, and to my surprise, my inbox instantly flooded with questions:

“Which one is best for my workflow?”

It became clear that many professionals in the industry shared my need for clear, unbiased assessments.

Creating the Future AEC Software Specification Assessment

In response to all the interest, I realised I needed to do more than just list the tools—I needed to evaluate them. That’s why I created the Future AEC Software Specification Assessment—a framework designed to objectively review and compare AEC software. This assessment looks at various criteria, including:

1. Workflow Integration – How easily does the tool fit into existing processes?
2. User-Friendliness – Is it intuitive and straightforward to adopt?
3. Design Quality Improvements – Does the tool actually boost creativity and efficiency?
4. Time Savings – Can it speed up feasibility studies and concept development?

By gathering data points in each of these areas, I was able to create a more holistic and transparent way to compare these tools.
