What 250 ConTech Leaders Revealed About the Future of Construction
Over the past year, I’ve had the privilege of connecting with more than 250 construction technology (ConTech) software companies. The insights from these discussions were mind-blowing—and they’re already shaping how the AEC industry will evolve in 2025.
From AI-driven generative design to new approaches in data management and low-carbon calculation tools, here are ten key takeaways I discovered:
1. AI & Generative Design Gains
AEC professionals see massive potential in AI-driven design, whether it’s automated clash detection or near-instant feasibility checks. Yet adoption remains patchy—decision-makers often require clear ROI and frictionless user experiences.
2. Tech Adoption Remains Tough
Despite the buzz around transformative tools, the construction sector can be notoriously slow to embrace change. Conventional processes are still deemed “safe,” so the challenge for innovators is proving tangible value—fast.
3. Marketplaces for AEC Tools
Central hubs like ADDD.io are becoming go-to destinations for firms to find, compare, and purchase new software. Vendors gain broader visibility; users appreciate the convenience of a one-stop shop.
4. Blurred Line Between Services & Products
Increasingly, AEC consultancies morph into SaaS platforms, while others introduce “consultancy-as-a-service” to bridge custom development with scalable product offerings.
5. Modular/Off-Site Gains Traction
Off-site construction currently hovers around just 2% of projects, but interest is rising. New tools are helping architects “think modular” from day one—poised to lower costs, speed timelines, and reduce on-site waste.
6. Data Quality & Standardisation
From point-cloud workflows and BIM to IFC exports and improved naming conventions, the push for consistent, structured data is stronger than ever. Automated QC processes are quickly moving from ‘nice-to-have’ to ‘must-have.’
7. Long-Term Partnerships
Implementation rarely ends after the proof-of-concept. Many companies invest in multi-year support contracts, ensuring seamless updates—think Revit plugins and cloud hosting—and stable relationships that outlast single projects.
8. Budget & ROI Sensitivities
Yes, margins are tight. That’s why proving concrete benefits is essential. Smaller firms lean on affordable or free trials; large contractors want fully integrated, end-to-end solutions that can scale.
9. Community & Knowledge-Sharing
Slack channels, WhatsApp groups, meetups—all help cut through hype and share real-world lessons. When peers swap Q&As, demos, and success stories, it fuels adoption and breaks down reluctance to change.
10. Microservices & Integration
AEC is shifting away from monolithic apps. Future tools are heading toward microservices—modular, API-friendly building blocks that handle geometry, cost calculations, compliance checks, or real-time analytics in specialized chunks.
