About the job
Are you a visionary Computational Designer ready to shape the future of architecture? At Hassell, we’re seeking exceptional talent like YOU to join our dynamic and collaborative Design Innovation team in London.
Through our work, we’re trying to build a more inclusive, sustainable future for communities – and create a more socially and ecologically resilient world.
About The Team
Hassell’s Innovation Team is the Skunkworks of the company, consisting of a small but highly skilled team of digital experts who work on a series of unique projects that heavily rely on digital design, analysis, and visualization tools. Our projects often take place in extreme environments, both on Earth and beyond. Over the past few years, we’ve designed a 3D-printed pavilion made from recycled plastics on a glacier in Switzerland, a music centre in the world’s second-largest refugee camp in Uganda, and inflatable habitats for the European Space Agency on the Moon. Our team strives to push the boundaries of sustainability and regenerative design principles in all aspects within our projects. While we’re passionate about technology, we believe that design is the real answer to most of our projects. Technology should enable and empower our design process. Our most notable project to date is the 3D-printed Mars Habitat for NASA’s Centennial Challenge.
About The Role
As a Computational Designer, you’ll drive the evolution of our computational design capabilities, aligning with Hassell’s global vision for innovation and excellence. You will be an integral part of the design innovation team, focusing on AI and advanced research projects. You’ll bring a strong architecture and design background, combined with exceptional coding skills and expertise in tools like Grasshopper.
Your role will involve delving into cutting-edge funded research projects, collaborating with institutions such as the European Space Agency and producing peer-reviewed papers.
You’ll be a digital native, bridging the gap between architectural design and innovative technology. This role is tailored for those with design experience, providing a unique platform to explore AI-driven design advancements and contribute to the evolution of architectural practice.
As we work on several projects on Earth and in space, we’re expanding the capabilities of our team. We’re seeking architects with a number of years’ experience to join our team in London. We’re a small, hard-working team where no job is too small for anyone on the team. The role can be very diverse. You might start the week building a scale model of a reciprocal roof structure, then write a computational script for an acoustical wall made of bricks midweek and finish off the week by visualizing a lower earth orbit space station using a real-time gaming engine.
About You
An architect assistant or architect with excellent design skills and extremely high digital design skill levels. You are a passionate early adopter of emerging design technologies. Skilled in 3D modelling software (such as Rhino) and parametric design (such as Grasshopper) as a baseline. We expect you to have some other digital modelling and computational skills that you could bring to the table. However, in addition to being a digital wizard, you have a genuine passion for design. You hold a master’s degree in architecture and experience working as a computational designer, you passionate about AI in design.
