We’re looking for a Unity Developer to become our Founding Engineer and join our mission-driven team in Oslo or remote.

About Appear 
Appear is on a mission to fix the broken product design process for rich XR experiences. We’re starting an ambitious journey to create next-generation tools to design immersive experiences with spatial computing. Our vision is to free the curiosity of designers from limitations of other platforms and static 2D frames and ultimately enable a design process that produces high quality and engaging XR experiences.

Appear is the first tool that focuses on the needs of XR-designers when composing advanced experiences and products for augmented and mixed reality. Our unique system enables the creation of rich and playful experiences that truly interact with the surrounding environment —we’re defining how we’ll interact with and within the immersive experiences.

About the job 
We’re looking for a Unity Developer to become a Founding Engineer and join our mission-driven team in Oslo, or remote. You’ll have a unique opportunity to be the Founding Engineer, bringing your expertise and passion to our newly formed company, Appear — powerful and playful next generation design tools for augmented reality.

As the very first engineer, you’ll get the chance to have a significant equity stake in the company, substantially impact how AR/XR experiences will be composed and curated in the future, and take a leading role in building a productive and empowering and diverse team culture.

We’re looking for a real team player who enjoys collaborating with other developers, designers and clients. You’ll need to be comfortable presenting your work and pitching your ideas, while also taking others’ opinions into account and making the best decisions for your team. Having experience at a startup, or similar early-stage product development environment, is a big bonus!

What we’d like you to do 
Define the long-term roadmap and build the technical foundation and architecture
Work hands-on with designers and technologists on prototypes, POCs and implementation of cross-platform AR features, editor and UI functionality
Own and ship experiments and features from the first sketch to implementation
Collaborate closely with the CEO, CTO and Head of Product to shape Appear and the future of AR experiences
Write clean and performant code as well as clear documentation
Ensure a seamless onboarding experience for new developers
Build and set up the development team for success through mentoring and advocating for best engineering practices
Create a healthy and empowering work culture

What we’re looking for  
A close understanding of Unity at an engine level

At least 4 years of experience on shipped projects (games/apps/simulations)
Excellent understanding of C#
Familiarity with Unity’s AR Foundation and its evolving API
Familiarity with trends and technologies across the spatial computing (AR/VR/MR) space
Familiarity with releasing mobile hardware, desktop, and HMDs
Familiarity with real-time networked experiences
Experience negotiating and collaborating with others
Experience building products from scratch
